OCTOBER – NATIONAL BULLYING PREVENTION MONTH
WHEREAS, bullying is physical, verbal, sexual, or emotional harm or intimidation
intentionally directed at a person or group of people; and
WHEREAS, bullying occurs in neighborhoods, playgrounds, schools, and through
technology, such as the internet and cell phones; and
WHEREAS, various researchers have concluded that bullying is the most common form
of violence, affecting millions of American children and adolescents
annually; and
WHEREAS, thousands of Michigan children and adolescents are affected by bullying
annually; and
WHEREAS, targets of bullying are more likely to acquire physical, emotional, and
learning problems and students who are repeatedly bullied often fear such
activities as riding the bus, going to school, and attending community
activities; and
WHEREAS, children who bully are at greater risk of engaging in more serious violent
behaviors; and
WHEREAS, children who witness bullying often feel less secure, more fearful, and
intimidated;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that I, Brian D. Marl, Mayor of the City of
Saline, on behalf of the Saline City Council and the citizens of Saline, do
hereby proclaim the month of October as “National Bullying Prevention
Month” in the City of Saline and encourage Saline’s schools, students,
parents, recreation programs, religious institutions, and community
organizations to engage in a variety of awareness and prevention activities
designed to make our community safer for all children and adolescents.

BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH
WHEREAS, Breast Cancer is the most common form of cancer in women in the United
States, and the second leading cause of cancer deaths among women; and
WHEREAS, Breast Cancer touches the lives of many Americans, either directly or
through the diagnosis of a family member or friend; and
WHEREAS, monthly self exams and mammograms are still the best ways to detect
breast cancer at an early treatable stage and can substantially reduce
the chance of death from breast cancer; and
WHEREAS, October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, dedicated to
increasing awareness of the importance of early detection of breast cancer
with special educational efforts;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Brian D. Marl, Mayor of the City of Saline, on behalf of the
Saline City Council and citizens of Saline, do hereby proclaim the month
of October 2013 as “Breast Cancer Awareness Month” in the City of Saline
and hereby urge all Americans to raise awareness of breast cancer by
talking with family members and friends about the importance of
screening and early detection and by educating ourselves and others in an
effort to improve our ability to prevent, detect, treat, and ultimately cure
breast cancer.

DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AWARENESS MONTH
WHEREAS, domestic violence is a serious crime that affects people of all races, ages, gender, and income levels; and
WHEREAS, domestic violence is widespread and affects over 4 million Americans each year, including people in the Saline community; and
WHEREAS, one in three Americans have witnessed an incident of domestic violence, and children that grow up in violent homes are believed to be abused and neglected at a rate higher than the national average; and
WHEREAS, domestic violence is a crime and knows no economic, ethical or social boundaries and in some way affects every community, every workplace, every family; and
WHEREAS, domestic violence costs the nation billions of dollars annually in medical expenses, police and court costs, shelters, foster care, sick leave, absenteeism, and non-productivity; and
WHEREAS, Domestic Violence Awareness Month provides an excellent opportunity for citizens to learn more about preventing domestic violence and to show support for the numerous organizations and individuals who provide critical advocacy, services and assistance to victims;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Brian D. Marl, Mayor of the City of Saline, on behalf of the
Saline City Council and citizens of Saline, do hereby declare the month
of October as “Domestic Violence Awareness Month” in the City of
Saline and urge all our citizens to work together to eliminate domestic
violence from our community. Domestic Violence, It Is Your
Business!
